Guru rape case: Dr Saint Gurmeet Singh found guilty, sentenced to a 10 year jail term
Dr Saint Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim Insan, whose conviction on two counts of rape sparked riots that have killed at least 38, has eventually been sentenced to a 10 year jail term, having been found guilty of the charge on Monday.
UK’s Morning Star reports that curfews were imposed on the town and in Sirsa, where his cult has its headquarters. Adding that train and bus services to Rohtak were suspended and all vehicles entering either town searched.
As at press time, four thousand police and paramilitaries patrolled the streets and devotees were ordered to leave the central ashram, with around 20,000 doing so. The guru, who claims to have 50 million followers, is however granted permission to appeal against the sentence.
Meanwhile, search is underway for a missing diver in North Sea. According to the UK Guardian Post, air and sea rescue mission launched after 68-year-old man from Brighton area reported missing near Great Yarmouth.
The 68-year-old man as identified is from the Brighton area. He was reported missing 12 miles (19km) east of Great Yarmouth at 6pm on Monday. Against this background, an air and sea search launched on Monday night continued on Tuesday.
