IRAQ- A report from Reuters confirmed the commencement of “aerial bombardment of Tal Afar, a town under Islamic State control in the west of Mosul. According to Reuters, Iraqi Defence Ministry spokesman stated accordingly earlier in a broadcast.

The ground attack, as planned, is to take over the city. This is expected when the air campaign is over. Iraqi authorities thus has said “Tal Afar, 80 km (50 miles) west of Mosul, will be the next target in the war on the Islamist militant group that swept through swathes of Iraq and Syria in 2014.”

“Islamic State’s self-proclaimed caliphate”, according to feeds from Reuters, “collapsed last month, when U.S.-backed Iraqi forces completed the recapture of the militants’ capital in Iraq, Mosul, after a nine-month campaign.”

The people of Tal Afar have been turned against another in the past. In 2003, following the invasion of U.S.-led mission, residents had clashes. Reuters thus reports this as sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shi’ites.

With this aerial bombardment of Tal Afar by Iraqi authorities, it is expected to serve as a cleansing on the city.
