Australia appoints Alison Chartres as High Commissioner to Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda

Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Tuesday, 10th of August announced the appointment of Ms Alison Chartres as Australia’s next High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya, with non-resident accreditation to Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda.

Ms Chartres will also be Australia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). The senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) will be accredited to the East African Community and the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region.

Over the years, Australia enjoys warm relations with East African countries through shared membership of the Commonwealth, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and the Indian Ocean Rim Association.

Ms Chartres was most recently Assistant Secretary, Development Policy and Education Branch. She has served overseas as Counsellor, Australian Mission to the United Nations, New York; Deputy Development Coordinator, Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI); Adviser, Solomon Islands Peace Monitoring Council; and as Second Secretary, Australian High Commission, Port Moresby.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation also report the recent meeting of Egyptian Charge d’Affaires ad interim with the country’s Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov in Russia Shadi Al-Sharqawi.

During their conversation, the officials discussed practical aspects of the bilateral agenda, including Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry’s forthcoming visit to Moscow. In addition, they exchanged opinions on a number of topical regional issues, focusing on the situation in Libya and prospects for a settlement in the Middle East.
