RAMADAN GIST – DAY 22: Laytul-Qadar (The Night of Power)
By Amatul Qafaar
“The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allaah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).” Quran Surah 97, Ayah 3.
Yes! 1000 months in only one night! You say one good thing and you will reap its rewards multiplied with one thousand months and that brings this question up, what are the authentic do’s and don’ts on such a night?
Let no minute pass you without a good plan for good deeds and let us all gear up for the essence of the last ten nights, in sha Allah.
Do’s for the last ten days/nights
- Pray Qiyam Layl (Prayer performed during the last parts of the night)
Whatever prayer that comes after the Maghrib prayer can be called Qiyaamu Layl, but this specially refers to the prayer that one performs after he/she sleeps and they wake up before they wake up for suhoor to pray and perform this special prayer for Allah descends to the lowest heaven.
- Read the Quran
Read, recite and ponder over the Quran for it is guidance is for the humanity at large and what is better way to celebrate for the Quran than to spend time with it’s company. It has been narrated that reading Surah Ikhlas three times is equal to finishing the Quran so go and look up the tafseer of Surah IKhlas and recite it while you understand it’s earth-shaking meaning.
- Dua
‘Oh Allah, You are the one who pardons and You love to pardon, so pardon us from our sins’ This is the official dua for the laylatul Qadr and you got it all if you get forgiveness from your Lord.
- Remember Allah
Be among those who remember Allah and Allah will remember you in this life and hereafter, whenever you glorify Allah it will be like you have been glorifying Allah for 1000 months.
- Spend from what you have been given
Spend from your money and your other abilities for that will be deposited in your hereafter accounts. Don’t withhold what you have been blessed with and you will get immense rewards with your acts, God willing. Spend some of your wealth and whatever that is in your ability on nightly basis and you will surely one day happen to have 1000 months of charity recorded for you, in sha Allah,
What not to do during these nights
- Don’t seek it from one particular night
It is authentically narrated that our beloved predecessors have all sought this night from the odd nights but that does not mean that they have abandoned the other nights too. Don’t deprive yourself from all that goodness by looking for laylatul Qadar in the 27th or only the odd nights. Don’t discriminate against the blessed nights and you won’t regret that.
- Go Tech-free
Don’t be busy with your phone, don’t browse all night and lose everything out. Go tech-free and be among those who grab the Laylatul Qadr and get every wish they make granted.
I hope this will help us to understand the night of power little better, insha Allah. I pray that we all be among those who Allah grants them the opportunity to win the Laylatul Qadar, Ameen.
Wa salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah
