African Community Celebrates Africa Day by Honoring the New Bronx Borough Director to The Mayor’s Office on Thursday May 25, 2017 from 6pm-8pm.

Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day), is the annual commemoration of the 25 May 1963 foundation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) (now known as the African Union) which is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.

African missions from around the world, including embassies in Washington DC, The African Union Observer Mission to The United Nations in New York will hold their own events in celebrating the Africa Day on Thursday, May 25, 2017.

The Borough of The Bronx in New York is known to be a microcosm for African immigrants and this community will be honoring Mr. Famod Konneh, the New Bronx Borough Director to the Mayor’s Office. Mr. Konneh hails from Liberia and served as the African Immigrant Outreach Coordinator and the Community Coordinator for the 28th & 32nd Precincts. Mr. Konneh joined the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in June 2010. Before joining the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Konneh worked for the Office of the New York State Attorney General in its Bureau for Intergovernmental and Community Affairs, as an intern and later as a community liaison. Currently, he is a member of the Manhattan and the Bronx Borough President’s African Advisory Councils. Mr. Konneh graduated from the University of Liberia in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with emphasis in International Economics. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from the Baruch College School of Public Affairs. As a Community Affairs Coordinator, Mr. Konneh plays a critical role in linking the resources of the District Attorney’s Office to the community and helping residents address quality of life crimes, as well as helping to develop strategies for prevention.

The African community is proud of the way in which Mr. Konneh uses his talents for the general good of the community. He could have chosen to go to Wall Street and join Corporate America but instead, he decided to apply his illustrious acumen to public service. The community remains appreciative of the New York City Government for enabling Mr. Konneh apply his leadership to the rest of the Bronx community and New York at large. There can never be a befitting moment than embracing the hard-earned and well deserving success of Mr. Konneh during the momentous African Day celebrations going on around the world.
