Weekly rallies at Hollis Avenue and 202 Street

Dear Neighbors,

Please remember to continue attending the weekly rallies at Hollis Avenue and 202 Street as we call for responsible development in our communities. The rallies are held each Saturday at 12:30 PM. Bring your friends, your neighbors, and your family members as we continue to bring attention to this issue and keep the pressure on The Bluestone Group.

If you see any utilities or city agencies working on a street in your area, please take pictures or call 311 and give our office the reference number. We have received numerous complaints about city agencies or utilities working in the roadway, yet failing to return the road to its original condition. We will do our best to monitor these occurrences and protect our roads.

Last Thursday morning I joined members of the Jamaica Muslim Center at the Jamaica High School football field for morning prayers in commemoration of Eid-al-Adha. This year marked the first time that the New York City Department of Education closed schools to commemorate this key holiday, along with Eid-al-Fitr. This victory, championed by the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays and countless advocates, gives roughly one-tenth of the public school population the freedom to observe religious practices without fear of losing precious school instruction time.

On Thursday, we also participated in the Jamaica Restaurant Crawl, an event that allowed us to sample the menus of three local restaurants. Please look out for, and participate in, similar events in the future, as the stability and success of small businesses in downtown Jamaica will largely depend on our support of these fine establishments.

Our culminating Senior Appreciation Month event, a luncheon and fashion show held last Friday, was a rousing success! Over 500 attendees packed the Majority Community Center to enjoy delicious food, fellowship, and fashions! Thank you to our volunteers and models for a job well done!

Thank you to the residents who attended Saturday’s Neighborhood Assembly at I.S. 238/ Susan B. Anthony Academy. Our goal is to include every neighborhood and every demographic in the district in the Participatory Budgeting process. If you have a civic, clergy or community group you’d like for us to present to, please contact Jessica Douglas at 718-776-3700 or jdouglas@council.nyc.gov.

Lastly, many of you have heard that the Chase Bank located at 134-40 Springfield Blvd in Springfield Gardens has been slated for closure. Please help us let Chase know that this is a poor decision that will negatively impact local consumers and businesses. Please sign this online petition to let Chase know that we value our community banks.

Sincerely,

I. Daneek Miller
