20 Passengers Die in South Sudan Accident
At least 20 people have died in South Sudan when a bus carrying over 60 passengers had a head-on crash with a lorry this morning.
The bus was heading to South Sudan’s capital Juba, while the lorry was moving towards the Uganda border.
Sixteen people died at the spot and the four others died on the way to hospital. According to police in south Sudan, the death toll might rise due to the critical condition of those injured.
Bakulu bus, with Ugandan registration number UAS 073P left Kampala for Juba last night and this morning was left with only 35 KM to complete its journey when the collision happened. It crashed with the lorry at a place called Nsitu.
“It was a terrible accident in which we lost people. We are still investigating the cause of the accident,” said William Awen, the South Sudan traffic officer in charge of the area where the accident occurred.
However, preliminary investigations attributed the accident to reckless driving by the lorry driver because he was reportedly driving on the left-hand side instead of the right as the South Sudan traffic laws require.
In Uganda they drive on the left side of the road and in South Sudan they drive n the right side of the road.
Most of those who died were traders from both South Sudan and Uganda.
