The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis’ health has worsened over the past 24 hours, describing his condition as “critical” for the first time.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who was hospitalized on February 14 for pneumonia in both lungs, experienced a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis” on Saturday morning, requiring supplemental oxygen and blood transfusions.

In a statement, the Vatican confirmed, “The Holy Father’s condition remains critical. The Pope is not out of danger.”

It added that while Francis remains alert and spent the day seated in a chair, he is “suffering more than yesterday,” and his prognosis is “guarded.” Blood transfusions were administered due to a low platelet count, which is linked to anemia.

Medical experts suggest the transfusions aim to boost the pope’s red blood cell and platelet levels, crucial for clotting and preventing bleeding.

Dr. Andrea Vicini, a Jesuit priest and professor at Boston College, noted that while the situation appears under control, the pope’s body is struggling to recover.

Francis, who has a history of lung issues, including the removal of part of one lung due to pleurisy, is particularly vulnerable to respiratory infections.

His doctors warned on Friday that the double pneumonia, caused by multiple microorganisms, could lead to sepsis if the infection spreads to his bloodstream—a potentially life-threatening complication.

The Vatican also confirmed that the pope will miss his second consecutive Sunday Angelus prayer, marking the first time he has skipped two in a row for health reasons. Despite his resilience—leading prayers shortly after intestinal surgery in 2021—his current condition underscores the severity of his illness.

Pope Francis, who has served as the head of the Catholic Church since 2013, has faced increasing health challenges in recent years, raising concerns about his ability to continue his demanding role.
