The United Nations humanitarian affairs chief, Tom Fletcher, has urged for immediate resources to rebuild Gaza’s hospitals, which have suffered devastating destruction during the Israeli 15-month military campaign.

Fletcher, who visited the war-ravaged Al Shifa Hospital, shared a harrowing account of the facility’s condition, describing it as a “mass grave.”

In a video posted on X, he harped on the brutal realities faced by medical personnel and patients, recounting stories of doctors who performed surgeries under sniper fire and delivered babies amid relentless attacks.

Among the many heartbreaking encounters, Fletcher met an elderly woman who had brought her son to the hospital for her cancer treatment.

Tragically, her son was shot on the road leading to the hospital. “She watched him bleed out on the road because of sniper fire, and then she watched the medical workers shot as they came to help him,” Fletcher recounted.

Israel’s relentless war on Gaza has killed a confirmed 48,181 people and injured 111,638, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry.

The Government Media Office recently updated the death toll to at least 61,709 people, stressing that thousands who were missing under the rubble are now presumed dead.
