Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris has announced a €20 million ($20.8 million) aid package for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) as it continues its humanitarian efforts in Gaza despite an Israeli ban.
“Today’s announcement underscores Ireland’s commitment to ensuring that there is a significant and meaningful surge in humanitarian aid into Gaza at this critical time. There is no replacement for the work of UNRWA, and it is vital that it is supported,” Harris stated.
Expressing deep concern over Israel’s ban on UNRWA, which took effect on January 30, Harris urged Israel to reconsider its stance.
He also called on other governments to provide financial support to UNRWA to ensure aid reaches millions of Palestinian refugees in need.
Israel recently outlawed the relief agency by the United Nations.
Tel Aviv accused 18 UNRWA employees of taking part in the October 10 assault by Hamas.
A UN investigation later found that nine employees may have been involved, and the agency fired them. UN officials reject Israel’s accusations against it and insist UNRWA is free from the allegations.
