Syria new leader congratulates Trump, calls for improved ties
Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has congratulated US President Donald Trump on his inauguration, expressing optimism about fostering stronger relations between the two nations.
In a statement on Monday, al-Sharaa remarked, “We are confident that he is the leader to bring peace to the Middle East and restore stability to the region.”
The United States, along with Britain, the European Union, and other nations, imposed stringent sanctions on Syria following ousted President Bashar al-Assad’s violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests in 2011, which escalated into a protracted civil war.
Earlier this month, Washington issued a six-month sanctions exemption for transactions involving Syrian governing institutions, aimed at facilitating humanitarian aid delivery.
Syria welcomed the decision as a positive step but reiterated its call for a complete lifting of sanctions to support national recovery efforts.
The Syrian government has framed the lifting of sanctions as a vital move to rebuild the war-torn nation and improve living conditions for its citizens, while maintaining hope for renewed diplomatic engagement under the Trump administration.
