Israeli military reports two projectiles fired from Gaza
Israel’s military reported that two projectiles were launched from Gaza early Wednesday as the new year began.
One of the projectiles was intercepted, while the other landed in an open area in the western Negev region, according to the Israeli army.
Alert sirens were triggered around midnight (2200 GMT) as the projectiles were detected coming from the central Gaza Strip into Israeli territory.
The military confirmed that their interception systems successfully neutralized one of the threats while the other caused no harm as it fell in an unpopulated area.
This incident follows a series of rocket launches from northern Gaza intercepted by Israeli forces in recent days. Israeli operations have intensified in Gaza’s north region since October, aimed at curbing Hamas’ ability to regroup following the October 7, 2023, attacks.
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties. Israeli official figures record 1,208 fatalities from the initial attack, mostly civilians.
Meanwhile, retaliatory Israeli military actions have led to over 45,500 deaths in Gaza, with the majority being civilians, based on data from Gaza’s health ministry, which the UN has deemed reliable.
