During his first visit to Sudan on Sunday, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher urged the international community to increase funding for Sudan’s humanitarian response plan for 2025.

Speaking in Port Sudan, Fletcher emphasized the urgent need for financial support, particularly as Sudan grapples with its worst humanitarian crisis in history.

Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Mona Nur al-Daim noted that donor funding for 2024 has been insufficient, with only $1.52 billion raised out of a requested $2.7 billion. This shortfall has significantly impacted efforts to address the needs of those displaced by ongoing violence in the country.

Fletcher’s visit is part of a broader effort to assess the situation on the ground and gather direct feedback from affected communities.

Both Fletcher and al-Daim highlighted the critical shortage of resources and called for increased aid to combat severe hunger, with 25.6 million Sudanese, including 755,000 people facing famine, in need of assistance.

The UN is expected to release its 2025 humanitarian response plan in early December, with hopes of securing more comprehensive international support.

Al-Daim also called for global condemnation of the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and urged for better access and permits for humanitarian operations in conflict zones.
