Iran: IAEA chief visits sensitive nuclear plants

The UN’s nuclear chief, Rafael Grossi, visited Iran’s Natanz and Fordo uranium enrichment facilities, central to international concerns over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The visit follows Grossi’s recent caution that “the margins for manoeuvre are beginning to shrink” regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.

Samuel Hickey, of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, emphasized the importance of Grossi’s inspection, both for technical monitoring and symbolic purposes.

He described Natanz as Iran’s primary uranium enrichment site and Fordo as one of the most proliferation-sensitive facilities, housing advanced centrifuges.

Hickey noted that Iran’s decision to grant access to Grossi signals its openness to diplomatic solutions.

By allowing such visits, Iran appears to demonstrate a willingness to address international doubts about its nuclear intentions through dialogue rather than confrontation.

The tour highlights the delicate balance between technical assessments and political negotiations in addressing global concerns over nuclear proliferation.
