Sudan: Deadly RSF attack kills 124 in Al-Sareeha village
At least 124 civilians were killed in a deadly attack by the Sudanese paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), on a village south of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, according to reports from activists and doctors.
If confirmed, this would be among the deadliest incidents since the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) began battling for control of the country in April last year.
The RSF reportedly launched the assault on Al-Sareeha village in Al-Jazirah, following the recent defection of an RSF commander in the region, sparking an escalation in violence. A member of the grassroots Resistance Committees told CNN that the attack left over 200 people injured and led to the detention of approximately 150 civilians.
The activist, who requested anonymity for safety, warned the actual death toll could be higher due to communication barriers.
“The RSF militia has seized all Starlink devices — the only means of communication available to civilians,” the activist said, adding that the violence has forced residents of more than 30 villages in eastern Al-Jazirah to flee.
The Sudan Doctors Network corroborated reports of mass casualties, describing the incident as a “massacre” resulting in scores of deaths, injuries, and widespread displacement.
As the SAF-RSF conflict persists, the United Nations has called the situation in Sudan one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with tens of thousands killed and millions displaced. Earlier reports has linked the RSF to brutal campaigns in Sudan’s Darfur region, marked by human rights abuses and described by many as the 21st century’s first genocide.
