UK: Met Office issues warnings as Storm Ashley hits with strong winds

The UK is bracing for severe weather conditions as Storm Ashley, the first named storm of the season, hits the country.

The Met Office has issued warnings for strong winds and heavy rain, with Scotland and Northern Ireland under yellow warnings and parts of northwest Scotland under an amber warning.

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud warned of “very strong, severe gales” coinciding with high spring tides, potentially resulting in “very large waves” and disruption.

The warnings are in effect until midnight, with the north of Scotland remaining under a yellow warning until 9am on Monday.

Scotland, Northern Ireland, southwest England, and South Wales are among the areas affected, with potential travel disruptions and safety concerns due to flooding, power supply interruptions, fallen debris, and trees impacting commuters.

Authorities advise avoiding unnecessary travel in Scotland, planning ahead, and checking weather updates. The annual Great South Run in Portsmouth has been cancelled due to weather-related safety concerns.

Police Scotland and Transport Scotland have warned of likely disruptions on roads and public transport, including the ferry network. Commuters are advised to consider alternative routes and stay informed with the latest weather updates.
