Russia cautions Israel over potential Iran strike
As the escalations in the Middle East intensify, Russia has issued a stern warning to Israel, urging them not to consider striking Iranian nuclear facilities.
The warning comes after Iran’s missile attack on Israel on October 1, which sparked speculation that Israel might retaliate against Iran’s nuclear facilities, a threat they’ve made repeatedly.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov pointed out that such an action would have catastrophic consequences and undermine global nuclear safety principles.
Ryabkov also highlighted that Russia maintains open communication with Iran, despite escalating regional tensions.
Israel has long suspected Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian energy program, a claim Tehran vehemently denies.
In response to the US cautioning against striking Iranian nuclear facilities, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that Israel would prioritize its national interests in determining its actions.
Netanyahu reportedly informed President Joe Biden’s administration that Israel would target Iranian military sites, excluding nuclear and oil facilities.
This development underscores the complex dynamics at play, with Russia strengthening ties with Iran since the Ukraine conflict and preparing to sign a significant partnership agreement with Tehran.
The situation remains volatile, with Israel having previously demonstrated its willingness to strike Iranian targets. In April 2024, Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military facilities, including an air defense radar site near the Natanz nuclear facility.
