Australian authorities are ramping up security measures and deploying additional police personnel ahead of pro-Palestine rallies in Sydney and Melbourne on October 6.

The rallies are part of a global response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has sparked protests from both Jewish and Palestinian groups worldwide, including in Australia.

Concerns have been raised that these protests could fuel community tensions and disrupt social harmony. In Sydney, the Palestine Action Group has changed its plans, dropping the October 7 rally, which marks the anniversary of Hamas’s deadly assault on Israel.

Instead, they’ll hold a rally on Sunday, after agreeing with police to alter the location, route, and avoid displaying prohibited organizations’ symbols. A vigil is planned for Monday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese considers October 7 a solemn day, noting that most Australians don’t want international conflicts brought into the country.

He cautioned, “(People) who are thinking of other actions on October 7, think about whether your cause is being advanced or set back.” New South Wales Premier Chris Minns warned against holding a vigil in Sydney on Monday, citing its insensitivity and promising an overwhelming police response if it turns into a protest.

Australia has seen a surge in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents since the Israel-Gaza war began. Laws banning public displays of terror group symbols were passed last year.

Recent Melbourne protests displayed Hezbollah flags and photos of leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, prompting an investigation. Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization in Australia.

To ensure safety, Victoria state police will increase patrols near Melbourne synagogues and around a community event on Monday.
