The Israeli military announced early August 25, 2024 that it was conducting pre-emptive strikes in Lebanon after detecting preparations for "large-scale" attacks by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Hezbollah said it had launched more than 320 rockets at Israel overnight, targeting a string of military positions, even as Israel's military said it was carrying out pre-emptive strikes against the group. The Israeli Air Force conducted airstrikes in western Yemen on Sunday, targeting infrastructure used by the Houthi group, which is backed by Iran. This military action was in response to the Houthi’s recent ballistic missile attacks on Israel, including three this month, with the latest occurring on Saturday.

The strikes, carried out by dozens of IAF aircraft, including fighter jets, refuelers, and spy planes, targeted power plants and ports in the port city of Hodeidah and the nearby Ras Isa port. The sites are allegedly used by the Houthi regime to import oil and transfer Iranian weapons to the region.

“The IDF attacked power plants and a port, which are used to import oil. Through the targeted infrastructure and ports, the Houthi regime transfers Iranian weapons to the region, and supplies for military purposes, including oil,” the military said.

“Over the past year, the Houthis have been operating under the direction and funding of Iran, and in cooperation with Iraqi militias in order to attack the State of Israel, undermine regional stability, and disrupt global freedom of navigation.”

“The IDF is determined to continue operating at any distance — near or far — against all threats to the citizens of the State of Israel,” it added.

According to the Houthi-run health ministry, four people were killed and 29 wounded in the attack. Residents reported power outages in most parts of Hodeidah.

This marks the second Israeli strike in Yemen, following an attack on Yemen’s Hodeidah port in July after a drone hit Tel Aviv, killing a man. The Israeli military emphasized its determination to operate against threats to its citizens, regardless of distance. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, “Our message is clear, for us, no place is too far” .

The airstrikes were part of a broader military operation, with the IAF also targeting locations in Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, and allegedly Syria, amidst a multifront war.
