US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed support for Israel despite the raging bloodshed that has ravaged the country in recent days.

Austin spoke with the Israeli military chief Yoav Gallant on Sunday night as Tel Aviv intensified its attacks across Lebanon, which it describes as part of a campaign to enable tens of thousands of Israelis to return to their homes in the north.

The backing is coming at a time when Israel launched hundreds of aerial strikes on alleged Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, resulting in one of the deadliest days in recent years.

US Defense Secretary noted the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to allow residents on both sides of the border to return home safely, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.

“The Secretary expressed his support for Israel’s right to defend itself as Hizballah extends its attacks deeper into Israel and stressed the importance of finding a path to a diplomatic solution that will allow residents on both sides of the border to return to their homes as quickly and safely as possible,” Ryder said.

Austin also underscored the need for a Gaza ceasefire deal to alleviate tensions. The Pentagon chief has been in frequent contact with Gallant since escalations increased last week.

The US has previously stated it won’t support Israeli offensive operations in Lebanon or elsewhere but is committed to protecting American forces and personnel in the region.

“The Secretary made clear that the United States remains postured to protect US forces and personnel and determined to deter any regional actors from exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict,” Ryder said.
