Saudi Arabia, Somalia express unity concerns in joint statement
Saudi Arabia and Somalia has solidified their diplomatic ties with a joint statement issued at the conclusion of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s official visit to the Kingdom on April 6, 2024. The statement emphasized both nations’ commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, showcasing a mutual concern for the nation’s stability.
President Mohamud’s visit, at the invitation of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, aimed to strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries. The president received a warm welcome at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah from Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.
Key discussions during the visit centered around bolstering economic, trade, and investment cooperation. Trade between Saudi Arabia and Somalia saw a significant surge of 105% from 2021 to 2022, reflecting the growing economic partnership. Both sides also explored investment opportunities aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, particularly in sectors like agriculture, livestock, fisheries, transportation, and logistics services.
The leaders also addressed the importance of maintaining stability in global energy markets, with Somalia acknowledging Saudi Arabia’s role in ensuring a balanced oil market conducive to sustainable economic growth. Additionally, discussions revolved around enhancing military and security cooperation to combat terrorism, smuggling, and other forms of crime.
Saudi Arabia commended Somalia’s efforts under President Mohamud’s leadership in restoring security and combating terrorist organizations, highlighting the need for international support in these endeavors. The Kingdom expressed support for lifting the arms embargo on Somalia by the UN Security Council, crucial for bolstering Somali security forces post the withdrawal of African Union forces.
Moreover, Saudi Arabia welcomed international creditors’ decision to forgive Somalia’s debt, acknowledging the country’s successful economic reforms. Notably, the joint statement underscored Saudi Arabia’s concern regarding the memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and the Somali region (Somaliland), reaffirming support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The leaders also discussed broader regional issues, including Palestine, Yemen, and Sudan, emphasizing the importance of international efforts to resolve these conflicts and maintain regional stability.
The visit concluded with President Mohamud expressing gratitude for the Kingdom’s hospitality and support, while the Crown Prince wished further progress and prosperity for the Somali people, highlighting the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
