Erbil International Airport officials announced on Tuesday night the temporary suspension of flights due to dense fog. Travelers were informed that normal operations would resume once weather conditions improve.

The airport’s administration, citing information from the weather forecasting department, advised that visibility would be compromised after 2:00 am. The administration clarified that the flight suspension is a precautionary measure and will be lifted when the weather situation improves.

Earlier forecasts for the Kurdistan region of Iraq predicted a wave of moderate fog extending from midnight until early morning, affecting areas including western Erbil, Duhok, parts of Kirkuk governorate, Sulaymaniyah, and surrounding regions. This disruption follows the recent grounding of flights at Erbil International Airport last week after a drone incident near the airport.

A statement from Prime Minister Mohammad Shia Al-Sudani’s spokesperson revealed that criminal groups attacked near the airport on Monday, December 25, at 3:50 p.m. The incident caused injuries and disrupted the flight schedule, as confirmed by Yahya Rasoul, the spokesperson of the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces. Rasoul assured that Iraqi security forces are actively pursuing the perpetrators to bring them to justice.
