Hamas has unveiled a video showcasing one of their hostages in the Gaza Strip. The brief clip features 21-year-old Mia Schem, a French-Israeli woman, lying on a bed with her right arm being attended to, displaying a prominent fresh scar.

Schem, now held captive by the militant group Hamas, pleads for her return to her family in this first glimpse into the ordeal of hostages in the region. Despite her pale appearance and evident pain, she maintains a composed posture while speaking into the camera.

Schem’s mother, Keren Scharf Schem, passionately implores government officials and world leaders to secure her daughter’s release during a press conference in Tel Aviv, clutching a picture of her missing child. She emphasizes that her daughter had merely attended a festival, seeking enjoyment, and now she is stuck in Gaza. Scharf Schem acknowledges the uncertainty of her daughter’s condition but expresses hope for her resilience.

While CNN cannot independently verify the video’s authenticity and Schem’s current status, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been in contact with her family since her kidnapping was reported. IDF spokesperson Maj. Libby Weiss describes the release of the video as a psychological warfare tactic employed by Hamas against the civilian population in Israel.

The exact number of hostages in Gaza remains uncertain, with conflicting reports from Hamas and IDF. Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, stated that they held approximately 200 hostages, while the rest were in the hands of other “militant formations” in Gaza, complicated by constant Israeli bombardment.

The IDF has intensified its attacks on Gaza following a deadly Hamas terror attack, resulting in numerous casualties, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. Meanwhile, Hamas accuses Israel of taking hostages and causing civilian casualties. Specific claims regarding casualties are challenging to verify independently.

Hamas spokesperson Abu Obaida has pledged to release hostages with foreign citizenship when the opportunity arises, affirming their commitment to their safety.

Mia Schem’s abduction occurred during the Nova festival near the Gaza Strip, following a Hamas attack that resulted in significant loss of life. The festival site became a grim scene, with the IDF reporting at least 260 casualties.

Schem’s family and loved ones are anxiously waiting for her return, describing her as the heart of the family. They remain determined to do everything in their power to bring her back home.
