Thousands attend NYC abortion marches, rallies
The “Bans Off Our Bodies” march is part of a nationwide set of rallies and marches against the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade.
New York City events began on Saturday with a rally and speeches at Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn at noon. The rally was followed by a march across the Brooklyn Bridge. The rally temporarily shut down the bridge.
As they marched to Foley Square in Manhattan, demonstrators were heard to be chanting “Bans off our bodies now!”
The mood was one of resistance, anger and defiance.
A 64-year-old federal government employee preparing advocating for abortion rights, Samantha Rivers said, “I can’t believe that at my age, I’m still having to protest over this,”
A group of anti-abortion demonstrators also sent out a countering message.
“Abortion is not health care, folks, because pregnancy is not an illness,” affirmed anti-abortion demonstrators shouting into microphones.
New York officials have assured women that abortion would remain legal in the state.
