United States Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, and a team of Republican senators have met with the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky.

The U.S. Embassy disclosed the meeting in a tweet on Saturday May 14, 2022.

Zelensky, who spoke about the meeting via his official Instagram account, noted that the visitors demonstrated bipartisan support for Ukraine.”

He equally appreciated the US leadership for helping in the fight. He stressed that the support is not only for Ukraine, “but also for democratic values and freedoms.”

Leaders who visited the president included McConnell, Sens. Susan Collins, John Cornyn, and John Barrasso.

The trip came two days after their fellow Republican, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, forced a temporary halt to the massive military and humanitarian aid bill.

A top Zelensky aide, Andrij Sybiha, who reacted via his Facebook page, stated that the visit signaled an imminent end to the impasse in the Congress.

“A decision on $40 billion is expected next week,” Andrij Sybiha wrote.

“Today, our state has the strong bipartisan and bicameral support of American friends. And the American people,” he added.

A report says House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, had held a similar surprise meeting with Zelensky on May 1.

First Lady Jill Biden has also extended greetings to Zelensky’s wife, Olena Zelenska, in an unannounced Mother’s Day trip over the Ukrainian border on Sunday.
