NYC major crimes increase, Mayor Adams blames judges for letting ‘dangerous people’ go free

Following NYPD issued stats showing a 34% jump in major crimes, New York City Mayor Adams has laid part of the blame at the feet of the court system, saying that judges are simply letting criminals go free.

“When you look at the number of arrests of dangerous people that we are doing, and then you look at the other side, they go to court and judges are letting them out,” he said.

“So the police officers are catching the guns, catching the bad guys, and by the time the police officers get back on patrol, they see the guy that they just caught.”

During a press conference at Times Square on Friday, Adams was asked to provide a timeline around when New Yorkers can expect to see results when it comes to lowering crime in the city.

As he has done before in recent days, Adams touted the fact that the NYPD has removed 2,500 illegal guns since the New Year.

“When you think about that number, it’s unbelievable,” he said.

Adams, however, did not provide a time frame within which people can expect to see crime subside. And while he claimed that the NYPD is doing its part, he suggested that other crucial actors are not doing theirs.

“It’s as though: Who’s on our team? Who’s on the team for innocent New Yorkers?” he said.

“We’re going to continue to do our job,” he continued.

“But we need help from a bottlenecked criminal justice system. We need help from those who believe that those who carry guns should not stay in jail. We need help to stop the flow of guns into our city. We need help to make sure that the laws that we are passing are sending the right message that it’s not acceptable to carry guns. So, the NYPD is going to continue to do their job.”
