Bronx teacher arrested for throttling 12-year-old student
A Bronx gym teacher was arrested Thursday for throttling a middle-schooler, cops said.
Chester Hingle, 45, was in the cafeteria of I.S. 217, the School of Performing Arts on Fox St. in Foxhurst about noon when he grabbed a 12-year-old boy by the neck, cops said.
He choked the child for a few seconds before releasing him, according to police.
Cops were called to the school, where they charged Hingle with endangering the welfare of a child and obstruction of breathing.
The boy was not harmed and didn’t need medical attention, cops said.
Hingle’s arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court was pending Friday.
Education Department spokeswoman Jenna Lyle said Hingle has been “reassigned away from the school and students pending the outcome of the arrest and if convicted, we will pursue his termination.”
“There is nothing more important than the safety and well-being of our students. This alleged behavior is completely unacceptable and will be fully investigated,” Lyle said.
City payroll records list Hingle’s start date in the Education Department as 2007, and he is described on a conference attendee list as a physical education teacher.
