Second world war veteran raises £7.5M, appreciates donors
Captain Tom Moore, a 99-year-old war veteran, has expressed his profound gratitude to the British people for their kindness and generosity as their donations surpassed his initial target of £1,000
Captain Tom Moore last week launched fundraising page with the title “Captain Tom Moore’s 100th Birthday Walk for the NHS,” to raise just £1,000 for The NHS staff who treated him for a broken hip.
He is raising the fund with a challenge to take a 100-meters walk of his Bedfordshire garden which is 25m in length using a walking frame. The captain aimed at completing the 100 laps of his garden before he turns 100 on April 30.
When he actually started the challenge he only hoped to raise £1,000 which he had initially thought was a real stretch.
Receiving the news on Wednesday morning that the donations had surpassed his initial target of £1,000 and had reached £7.5, the captain became overwhelmed with appreciations.
“Thank you so much to all you people who subscribed to the National Health Service because for every penny that we get, they deserve every one of it,” the captain said.
“I think that’s absolutely enormous,” he added.
Talking about how amazingly people have turned up for the donations, he ascertained high regard people have for the country’s National Health Service.
“It just shows that people have such high regard for matters of our National Health Service and it’s really amazing that people have paid so much money,” he said.
According to Hannah Ingram, the captain’s daughter, “The amount finally raised was beyond our wildest expectations. We appreciate people for their wonderful donations,” she stated.
“No words can express our gratitude to the British public for getting behind Tom, for making this into a heartfelt story,” she added.
