Sultan hosts Qur’an competition, speaks on effects of social media on girls.
SOKOTO – Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar II, who is the current Sultan of Sokoto successfully hosted the 6th national edition of the Quranic recitation competition on Sunday. The traditional ruler gives motivating words at the closing ceremony, targeted at Muslim girls who have been ridden with social media.
The Sultan noted that the situation is disturbing, emphasizing that the new age turn on social media by these students is affecting their academics.
“There is a disturbing development where the attention of students is being diverted from their studies. This is through the use of various social media like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, 2go and Instagram, among others, ” the Sultan was reported to have said.
It is reported that the competition comprised of eighty nine participants, who were given ten thousand naira each. The overall winner, Husna Nura from Katsina descent was awarded one hundred thousand naira. A gift of Hajj seat was also given to the overall winner in addition to one hundred and fifty thousand naira and a deep freezer.
As compensation, other participants got deep freezers and cash. Reports gathered from NAN further explained that twenty two states partook in the competition, which was dedicated for non-Arabic girls’ secondary schools and hosted by Sokoto state government.
“The competition would encourage girls to memorize the whole chapters of the Qur’an,” Governor Aminu Tambuwal had reportedly said.
The Sultan once again laid emphasis on the time girls spend on social media at the expense of valuable activities. He noted that this will only cause catastrophe in the society.
“The rate at which girls are spending time on social network is worrisome and this poses imminent danger to our society,” he stressed. Adding that “Girls are the nerve center of our moral and societal development and if they derail, the whole society will be in danger because they are our mothers and care givers.”
